This well built USB hard drive has enormous capacity and good design with two colored lights in front to show power status and activity. In this case, “well built” also translates into large. The unit itself isn’t small, and when you add in the box on the power cord, there’s lots of hardware. On the other hand, if you own an HP media computer with a media drive bay, it couldn’t be more elegant. Out of the box, you simply slide the drive into the bay until it firmly seats. That’s all. You’re done. Power up the computer and you have tons more storage.

Given the slight price premium for such elegance, this unit would still be perfect if it weren’t for its internal cooling fan. Now, I’m not a novice when it comes to noise control, and the Hp media computers aren’t all that quiet themselves when they get their board, drive, and graphics fans all going at once. And, since the drive simply slides into the bay with some aligning ridges, there’s bound to be some vibrational noise.

All that being said, the cooling fan in the unit is a virtual orchestra of hums, whoops, whines, wails, and shrieks. I’ve gotten into the habit now of putting the computer to sleep when I’m out of the room. I woke in the middle of the night to a high pitched whine which I eventually determined was the drive fan. I put the computer to sleep, and I got some.

In fairness, it may simply be a “burn-in” problem, as it seems to have somewhat quieted down. It still murmurs occasionally but overall it seems to have settled down to a sullen mutter rather than its former rebellious yell.

One note of caution: Most if not all backup programs will see this as an external drive, and not see this drive as part of your computer. MS OneCare automatic backup will see it as a backup device but not as a computer drive. It won’t back it up. If you’re using it for initial storage you’ll need a configurable backup program like GoodSynch or NovaBackup.

Overall, if the unit continues to calm down aural

Wow! the A Media We

An excellently written and very interesting story which actually does have an unexpected ending!

However, there is a great deal of violence, sexual violence and sadistic behavior in general.

I wish that this excellent writer could write a book for adults which wouldn’t call for reading so much trashy stuff. I’m a great believer in “garbage in, garbage out” and wish that my recollectons of this otherwise terrific book didn’t include the above trash, and/or large sections which I skipped just because I didn’t want to put such stuff into my poor brain to remember! This was such a wonderful story that I feel badly that I find it necessary to warn about the trashy side of it.
